The Gateway Center is a group of tall buildings in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. It has five buildings with a huge amount of office space, about 1,500,000 square feet (140,000 m2).
The idea for Gateway Center started during World War II. The goal was to fix up a crowded and run-down area where the Ohio River forks. This area would become Point State Park and a new "Gateway" of offices.
The project got all its money on September 21, 1949. This happened when the Equitable Insurance Co. of New York agreed to pay for it. They did this after big companies like Westinghouse and Mellon Financial promised to rent space.
In May 2013, the National Park Service named a special area in downtown Pittsburgh the "Pittsburgh Renaissance Historic District". The Gateway Center buildings were included in this district. This means they are important parts of Pittsburgh's history.
History of Gateway Center
Before Gateway Center was built, this area was mostly a run-down warehouse district. To make space, a large building called the Wabash Pittsburgh Terminal had to be torn down. This building was built in 1904 and had 11 floors.
The first three buildings of Gateway Center were finished in 1952. They all looked very similar. The Wyndham Grand Hotel was added in 1959. The last office building was completed in 1960.
In 2004, a company called Hertz Investment Group bought Gateway Center. They paid US$55 million for the buildings. The architects for the first three buildings were Eggers & Higgins. They also designed the Thomas Jefferson Memorial.
