Gausfred III of Roussillon facts for kids
Gausfred III was a powerful count who ruled the area of Roussillon from 1113 until his death in 1164. He became count when he was still a child. His father, Girard I, was killed, which meant Gausfred had to take over early. Because he was so young, his uncle, Arnold Gausfred, helped rule as a regent until Gausfred was old enough in 1121.
Early Rule and Challenges
When Gausfred III began his rule, he faced some challenges. He had ongoing disagreements with the Trencavel family. They were powerful viscounts who ruled the nearby region of Béziers. These disputes were a common part of life for rulers in those times.
Building Alliances
Even with some conflicts, Gausfred III also worked to keep peace with his neighbors. He continued the friendly relationships that his grandfather, Giselbert II, had started with the counts of Ampurias. These good ties were very important for the safety and trade of Roussillon.
Important Treaty
To make sure everyone understood their rights, Gausfred III signed a special agreement. This treaty officially recognized the shared rights and borders between Roussillon and Ampurias. It helped keep the peace between the two counties for many years, from 1121 to 1155.
Family and Legacy
Gausfred III was also known for his connection to the arts. He was the lord, or suzerain, of a famous poet and musician called Berenguier de Palazol. Berenguier was a troubadour, which means he wrote and performed songs. He often praised Gausfred in his songs, calling him Jaufres.
Gausfred III married a woman named Ermengard. She was the daughter of another important leader, Viscount Bernard Ato IV. Gausfred and Ermengard had a son together. Their son, Girard II, later became the next count of Roussillon after Gausfred III died.
