Girard II of Roussillon facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Gerard II (pronounced Jer-ARD) was an important leader in the County of Roussillon a long time ago. He was the very last count who ruled Roussillon almost completely on his own. He was a count from 1164 until he passed away in 1172. Gerard II was the son of Gausfred III, who was also a count before him.

Just like his father, Gerard II worked hard to keep the peace. He made sure to continue peace agreements with the leaders of a nearby area called Ampurias. When Gerard II became count, Roussillon was not as strong as it used to be. Because of this, he had to promise his loyalty to Alfonso II. Alfonso II was a very powerful king who ruled Aragon and was also the count of Barcelona.

When Gerard II died, he didn't have any children to take over his role. So, he gave his county of Roussillon to King Alfonso II. This meant that Roussillon became part of Alfonso II's lands.

Who Was Gerard II?

Gerard II was a count, which was a type of ruler, in the County of Roussillon. This area is now part of modern-day France and Spain. He was known by different names depending on the language, like Girard in French or Gerardo in Spanish. He took over from his father, Gausfred III, in 1164.

Challenges as Count

When Gerard II became count, his county was not very strong. It had become weaker over time. This meant he faced big challenges in keeping Roussillon independent. To protect his people and land, he had to make some difficult choices.

Keeping the Peace

One of the most important things Gerard II did was to keep peace with his neighbors. He continued the peace treaties that his father had made with the counts of Ampurias. These agreements helped prevent wars and kept the region stable.

Roussillon Joins Aragon

Because Roussillon was not very strong, Gerard II had to make a special promise to King Alfonso II. This promise was called "doing homage." It meant Gerard II recognized Alfonso II as a more powerful ruler.

No Heirs, New Ruler

Gerard II did not have any children to inherit his title and lands. When he passed away in 1172, he decided to give Roussillon to King Alfonso II. This was a big moment because it meant Roussillon was no longer an independent county. Instead, it became part of the larger Crown of Aragon.
