Gavin Friday (born Fionán Martin Hanvey, 8 October 1959) is a talented Irish artist. He is a singer, songwriter, composer, and actor. He is also known for his painting. Gavin Friday is best known as a founding member of the post-punk music group called The Virgin Prunes.

Gavin Friday's Early Life
Fionán Hanvey was born in Dublin, Ireland. He grew up in a neighborhood called Ballygall. When he was 14, he met Bono and Guggi at a party. Bono, who later became the lead singer of U2, said they became friends that day.
His Amazing Career in Music and Art
Gavin Friday started his career as a founding member of The Virgin Prunes. This was a post-punk band. After the band ended in 1986, Gavin Friday focused on painting. He shared a studio with his friends Bono, Guggi, and Charlie Whisker. They even had an art show together in Dublin.
Working with Maurice Seezer
From 1987 to 2005, Gavin Friday worked closely with Maurice Seezer. Maurice is a musician who plays many instruments. They released three albums together. They also wrote music for movies. Some of their movie scores include The Boxer and In America. The music for In America was even nominated for an award!
Collaborations with Bono and Other Artists
Gavin Friday and U2's Bono have been close friends since they were kids. They have worked together on many projects. They wrote songs for the movie In the Name of the Father. One song, "You Made Me the Thief of Your Heart," was sung by Sinéad O'Connor. It was nominated for a Golden Globe award. In 2003, they wrote "Time Enough for Tears" for the movie In America. Andrea Corr sang this song, and it was also nominated for a Golden Globe.
In 1995, Gavin Friday sang a song called "Look What You've Done (To My Skin)." This song was for the movie The Passion of Darkly Noon. In 2006, Gavin Friday was part of a special music project. It was a collection of sea shanties (old sailor songs) called Rogue's Gallery: Pirate Ballads, Sea Songs, and Chanteys. In 2007, Gavin Friday performed at the Meltdown Festival in London. He sang Disney songs like "The Siamese Cat Song" and "Castle in Spain." He shared the stage with other famous artists like Grace Jones and Nick Cave.
Gavin Friday also worked with English composer Gavin Bryars. They performed a new version of Shakespeare's Sonnets. Gavin Friday performed Sonnet 40. In 2009, Gavin Friday started working on his fourth solo album. It was released in 2011 and was called catholic.

His Personal Life
Gavin Friday used to live next door to his friend Bono and his wife Ali Hewson in Killiney, Dublin. He now lives in another part of south Dublin called Rathmines. He is also the godfather to Bono's daughter, actress Eve Hewson.
