There, he was part of the team that won the Division One title in 1999. They earned an amazing 105 points that season, which helped them get promoted to the Premier League.
Time at Aston Villa
In 2003, Gavin signed with Aston Villa. During his time there, he faced several injuries. He scored one goal in the 2006–07 season. This goal happened during a game where Aston Villa lost 3–1 to Manchester City. After a while, he wasn't playing as much as he used to. So, he decided to leave Aston Villa.
Moving to Bolton Wanderers
In June 2007, Gavin signed a five-year contract with Bolton Wanderers. He scored his first goal for Bolton in December 2007. This was in a UEFA Cup group game against Red Star Belgrade, which Bolton won 1–0. He scored another goal in the UEFA Cup knockout stage against Sporting Clube de Portugal. His first league goal for Bolton came in April 2008, helping his team win 1–0 against Middlesbrough.
In November 2008, Bolton's manager, Gary Megson, praised Gavin. He said Gavin was playing some of the best football of his career. Gavin's contract ended in June 2010. He had a knee injury, and the new manager, Owen Coyle, said he could earn a new contract once he recovered. However, in early 2011, his teammate Kevin Davies shared that Gavin had retired from playing. He couldn't fully recover from his injury.
International Appearances
Gavin McCann played once for the England national team. This was in a friendly match against Spain in 2001. The game took place at Villa Park.
Coaching Career
Starting an Academy
In February 2008, Gavin started his own football academy in Lytham St Annes. It was the first of its kind in the Fylde coast area. The Milligan-McCann Academy was created for children aged 8 to 12. Gavin worked with former Blackpool players, Jamie Milligan and John Hills, to create the academy. They all grew up together in Blackpool. The academy even received a grant to help more children play "park football."
Working with Bolton and Hyde United
After he stopped playing, Gavin stayed involved with Bolton Wanderers. He worked with their youth teams. In May 2012, he became the Assistant Manager and first team coach at Hyde. He left Hyde's management team in early 2015. After that, he studied to get his professional coaching badges. He also coached a local Sunday morning team.
In late 2015, Gavin returned to Bolton to coach their Under-15 team. By 2018, he was promoted to coach Bolton's Under-18 team. He left Bolton on January 29, 2021. After six years coaching at Bolton's academy, he went back to Hyde United in February 2022. He became the first team coach there, working again with his former Bolton colleague Nicky Spooner.
