Gayle Forman, born on June 5, 1970, is an American author. She is famous for writing books for young adults. Her most well-known book is If I Stay. This book was a huge success, even becoming a movie! It was a top seller on the New York Times list for young adult fiction.

Becoming an Author
Gayle Forman started her writing journey at Seventeen magazine. She wrote many articles about young people and important social topics. Later, she became a freelance journalist. This means she wrote for different magazines like Details, Jane, Glamour, The Nation, Elle Magazine, and Cosmopolitan.
First Books and Travel
In 2002, Gayle and her husband, Nick, traveled all around the world. Their adventures gave her ideas for her first book. This book, called You Can't Get There From Here: A Year On the Fringes of a Shrinking World, was a travelogue. It shared stories from their trip. In 2007, she published her first novel for young adults. It was called Sisters in Sanity. This book was based on an article she had written for Seventeen magazine.
The If I Stay Series
In 2009, Gayle Forman released If I Stay. This book is about a 17-year-old girl named Mia. Mia is in a serious car accident. She is in a coma but can still hear and understand everything around her. The book won the 2009 NAIBA Book of the Year Award. It also won a 2010 Indies Choice Book Award.
The movie based on If I Stay came out on August 22, 2014. It starred Chloë Grace Moretz as Mia. The story continued in a sequel called Where She Went. This book was released in 2011. It tells the story from the point of view of Adam, Mia's boyfriend. It shows their relationship a few years after the accident.
The Just One Day Series
In January 2013, Forman released Just One Day. This novel follows Allyson Healey. On the last day of her trip in Europe after graduation, Allyson meets a Dutch actor named Willem. She makes a quick decision to go to Paris with him. They spend a whole day together before he suddenly disappears.
The sequel, Just One Year, came out in October 2013. This book tells the same story as Just One Day. But this time, it's told from Willem's perspective. The final part of Allyson and Willem's story is Just One Night. This is a shorter book, or novella, that was released as an ebook on May 29, 2014.
Other Novels
In January 2015, Forman released I Was Here. This book is about an 18-year-old girl. She is dealing with the sudden loss of her best friend. A month later, New Line Cinema bought the rights to make it into a movie.
Gayle Forman also writes books for adults. Her first adult novel, Leave Me, was released on September 6, 2016.
Awards and Recognition
Gayle Forman has won several awards for her writing. She won the British Fantasy Award in 2010. She also received the ALA/YALSA Quick Pick for Reluctant Young Adult Readers in 2010. She was nominated for other awards too. These include the South Carolina Book Award for Young Adult Book Award in 2011. She was also nominated for the Goodreads Choice Award for Young Adult Fiction in 2009.

Gayle Forman lives in Brooklyn, New York. She lives there with her husband, Nick Tucker, and her daughter.
In 2010, Gayle took part in discussions at the annual Los Angeles Times Festival of Books. She was on a panel called "Young Adult Fiction: Teens and Turmoil." She discussed writing for teens with other authors like Jandy Nelson and Cynthia Kadohata.
