Jandy Nelson's first novel, The Sky Is Everywhere, was published in 2010. This book is about a 17-year-old girl named Lennie Walker. Lennie is dealing with the death of her sister. She feels lost and is trying to figure out who she is. Lennie must learn to take charge of her own life.
The Sky Is Everywhere was chosen as a "Best Fiction for Young Adults" by the Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA). It also appeared on many "best of the year" lists. These lists included ones from NPR and the Chicago Public Library. By April 2015, the book had been published in more than 20 countries.
I'll Give You the Sun (2014)
Nelson's second novel, I'll Give You the Sun, came out in 2014. This book became a New York Times bestseller. It tells the story of twins, Noah and Jude, who are very close but also competitive.
Family problems and misunderstandings cause a big distance between them. They only start to understand themselves and fix their lives when they come back together.
I'll Give You the Sun won the Printz Award. It also received the Josette Frank Award for older readers. The book was recognized as a Stonewall Book Award Honor Book. It was also a finalist for the 2014 California Book Awards for Young Adults.
This novel appeared on many "best of the year" lists too. These included YALSA's Top 10 Best Fiction for Young Adults in 2015. It was also on Time magazine's Top 10 YA Books. By April 2015, I'll Give You the Sun had been published in 25 countries. Warner Bros. also bought the rights to make it into a movie.
