Gaylord is a small, quiet place in Coos County, Oregon, United States. It is called an unincorporated community. This means it is a group of homes or buildings that does not have its own local government. Instead, it is part of the larger county.

About Gaylord, Oregon

Where is Gaylord?

Gaylord is located in the beautiful state of Oregon. It is about 12 miles (19 km) south of a town called Myrtle Point. You can find it along Oregon Route 542, which is a road that runs through the area. The community is also very close to the South Fork Coquille River.

A Look at Gaylord's History

Gaylord has a simple but interesting history. In 1916, a place called Gaylord Siding was created. This was a spot on the Coos Bay Line of the Southern Pacific Railroad. A "siding" is like a side track where trains can wait or pass each other.

Later, in 1927, a post office was opened nearby. It was also named Gaylord. This post office helped people send and receive mail in the area. However, the post office eventually closed its doors in 1958.

The Mystery of the Name

Even today, nobody knows for sure where the name "Gaylord" came from. The reason it was chosen for the railroad siding and the post office remains a mystery.

The author Ralph Friedman once wrote about Gaylord. He said it was "Nothing but a name." This means that Gaylord is a very small place, perhaps just a sign or a few buildings, rather than a busy town.
