What is Geisha Chocolate?
This chocolate is known for its creamy milk chocolate shell. Inside, it has a delicious filling made from hazelnuts. This special filling is called "Japonais" because it was inspired by a Japanese-style pastry.
How Geisha Chocolate Was Invented
The idea for Geisha chocolate came to life in 1962. A person named Peter Fazer, who was part of the Fazer family, really loved a pastry called "Japonica." This pastry was sold at the Karl Fazer Café in Kluuvikatu, Helsinki. Peter thought, "What if we put this amazing filling inside milk chocolate?" So, he asked the people who develop new products to try it out. And that's how Geisha chocolate was born!
The Story Behind the Name "Geisha"
The name "Geisha" and the pink color of the wrapper came from another candy that Fazer used to make. This candy was part of a mix called "Fazer's Best" (or "Fazerin Parhain"). That candy was later renamed "Tokyo."
Japan was a big inspiration for the chocolate. This was especially true because of the 1964 Summer Olympics held in Tokyo. Peter Fazer himself even competed in these Olympics in sailing!
Changes to Geisha Chocolate Over Time
In 2006, the way Geisha chocolate was wrapped changed. The picture of a geisha (which was actually a maiko, a geisha-in-training) was removed. The style of the letters on the wrapper was also updated. In 2020, Fazer announced they were thinking about changing the name of the product.
