Geko was a music duo from Los Angeles. They played a type of music called gothic rock. The band started in 1983. It had two main members: Sarah Folkman, who sang and played bass, and Carrie McNinch, who played guitar. They put out one album, Join My Pretty World, in 1992. After that, the band stopped making music together.
History of Geko
Geko was formed in 1983. Sarah Folkman and Carrie McNinch started the band. They were roommates and students at the time. Both loved early death rock, rockabilly, and punk rock music. These styles influenced their sound.
After playing live shows for a few years, the band recorded a demo. This demo had six songs. In 1991, they released their first official music. It was a 7-inch record called "Probing the Gash in Her Head. This record was released by Open Records.
Making Their Album
In 1992, Geko released their only full-length album. It was called Join My Pretty World. A well-known producer from Los Angeles, Earle Mankey, helped them make it. The album included songs they had recorded before. It also had brand new songs.
A music critic named Ned Raggett from allmusic said the band was "sharply powerful." He also described the album as "rough, industrial-strength darkwave music." He felt it was good enough to listen to many times.
What Happened Next
The Geko duo broke up soon after their album came out. Carrie McNinch left the music world. She started making her own comic books, called zines. Some of her zines were The Assassin and the Whiner and Food Geek. Her mini comic You Don't Get There From Here is still published regularly.
Carrie's work is also in many other comic collections. These include QU33R and No Straight Lines: Four Decades of Queer Comics. She also wrote a book called I Want Everything to be Okay.
Sarah Folkman continued to work with other bands. She collaborated with groups like Spiderworks and Vampire Rodents. She also worked with proGREX.iv. In 1997, she joined the trip hop band THC. Sarah has also become known as a visual artist and illustrator.
