General Güemes, often called Güemes, is a city located in the center of the Salta province in Argentina. It is home to about 47,348 people, based on the 2010 census. This city is also the main town, or "head town," of the General Güemes Department.
Location and Name
General Güemes is located about 45 kilometers (about 28 miles) east-northeast of Salta, which is the capital city of the province. It sits right on National Route 9, an important road. The city is named after Martín Miguel de Güemes, a famous hero from Argentina's fight for independence. He was a caudillo, which means a strong military and political leader.
Transport and Connections
General Güemes is an important hub for transportation. It is the final stop for a narrow-gauge train line that connects it directly to the city of Salta. This makes it easier for people and goods to travel between the two places.
Interesting Fact
In 2008, General Güemes gained some attention in the news. There were reports of people seeing a "mysterious gnome" in the area. These sightings became a topic of discussion in the media.
