Genestrerio (called Genestree in the local Lombard dialect) was once a small municipality in Switzerland. It was located in the Mendrisio district within the canton of Ticino. A canton is like a state or province in other countries.
What Was Genestrerio?
Genestrerio was a small town with its own local government. It covered an area of about 1.45 square kilometers. In 2011, nearly 1,000 people lived there. It was a peaceful place in the southern part of Switzerland.
Where Is It Located?
Genestrerio is in the Ticino canton. This canton is special because Italian is its main language. It is in the southern part of Switzerland, close to the border with Italy. The area is known for its beautiful landscapes.
Becoming Part of Mendrisio
On April 5, 2009, Genestrerio changed. It joined with several other nearby towns. These included Arzo, Capolago, Rancate, and Tremona. They all became part of the larger Mendrisio municipality. This kind of merger happens when smaller towns combine to form a bigger one. It helps them share resources and manage services better. Now, Genestrerio is known as a "quarter" of Mendrisio. This means it's a part of the bigger city.
