Geneviève Fioraso (born 10 October 1954) is a French politician. She was a member of the National Assembly, which is like the French parliament, from 2007 to 2017. She represented a part of France called Isère. From 2012 to 2015, she also served as the Minister for Higher Education and Research in the French government. This means she was in charge of schools and universities.

Growing Up and School Years

Geneviève Fioraso was born in Amiens, France, in 1954. She was the youngest of six children. She finished high school and got her diploma, called a Baccalauréat, when she was just 16 years old. She later went to the University of Amiens and earned a master's degree in English. After finishing her studies, she worked as an English teacher in Amiens.

Starting Her Career

In 1978, Geneviève Fioraso stopped teaching and moved to Grenoble, a city in France. There, she started working for the City of Grenoble. She first handled information and then managed documents and press for the city. She also began working with Hubert Dubedout, who was the mayor of Grenoble and a member of parliament. In 1983, she became his special assistant in parliament.

In 1985, she helped with a local election campaign. From 1989 to 1995, she worked for a company called Corys, which was a new company started by a big French research organization called the CEA.

When Michel Destot became mayor of Grenoble in 1995, he asked her to be his main advisor. In this role, she focused on the city's economy and new ideas.

From 1999 to 2001, Geneviève Fioraso led a regional agency that worked on digital networks. Then, from 2001 to 2004, she worked at France Telecom, a large phone company. She was in charge of finding new markets in health and social care.

Starting in 2008, she became a city official in Grenoble, focusing on the economy, universities, and research. She also helped lead the local government group for Grenoble, working on economic growth. She was also the CEO of a company that promoted a high-tech research center called Minatec.

Her Time in Politics

Serving in the National Assembly, 2007–2017

In 2007, Geneviève Fioraso was elected as a députée, which means a member of the French Parliament. She won with a lot of votes, getting 63.03% in her area. She was part of the Socialist group in parliament. She also served on a committee that looked at economic and environmental issues. She was also a member of a special office that studied scientific and technological choices for the country.

Becoming a Minister for Higher Education, 2012–2015

In 2012, Geneviève Fioraso was chosen to be the Minister for Higher Education and Research. This meant she was in charge of all universities and research in France.

In February 2014, she was invited to a special dinner at the White House in the United States. This dinner was hosted by U.S. President Barack Obama to honor the French President, François Hollande.

In December 2014, she helped solve a big disagreement between France and Germany about the European Space Agency. Thanks to her efforts, 20 governments agreed to fund the Ariane 6 space rocket. This was a very important step for space exploration in Europe.

Geneviève Fioraso decided not to run for re-election in 2017.
