Geoff Ogilvy was born in Adelaide, South Australia. He decided to become a professional golfer in 1998. He first played on the European Tour for two years before joining the American PGA Tour in 2001.

He quickly showed he was a talented player. In 2005, he won his first PGA Tour event, the Chrysler Classic of Tucson. The next year, he won the 2006 WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship, a special tournament where players compete one-on-one.

The Unforgettable 2006 U.S. Open

Ogilvy's most famous moment came at the 2006 U.S. Open. This is one of the four most important tournaments in men's golf, known as major championships.

Going into the final holes, it didn't look like Ogilvy would win. But he played amazingly under pressure. On the 17th hole, he made a difficult shot from off the green, chipping the ball into the hole from 30 feet away to save par. On the 18th and final hole, he made another crucial putt to finish his round.

Then, he had to wait and watch as his competitors finished. Top players Phil Mickelson and Colin Montgomerie both struggled on the last hole, giving Ogilvy a surprising and dramatic victory by just one stroke. He became the first Australian to win a major championship in over ten years.

Success on the World Stage

Winning the U.S. Open launched Ogilvy into the top 10 of the Official World Golf Rankings. He reached as high as number 3 in the world during his career.

He continued to win big events.

  • 2008 WGC-CA Championship: His second World Golf Championship title.
  • 2009 WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship: He won this event for a second time.
  • 2010 SBS Championship: He started the year with a victory at the first PGA Tour event.
  • 2014 Barracuda Championship: After a few years without a win, he won this tournament, which uses a special scoring system called Stableford.

Personal Life

Ogilvy is married to Bree Laughlin, and they have three children. He lives with his family in Scottsdale, Arizona, in the United States.
