Geoff Ogilvy's Golf Journey
Starting as a Pro Golfer
Geoff Ogilvy was born in Adelaide, South Australia. He decided to become a professional golfer in May 1998. Soon after, he earned a spot on the European Tour, a major golf tour in Europe. He played there in 1999 and 2000, improving his ranking each year.
In 2001, Geoff joined the PGA Tour in the United States. He quickly became a consistent player, finishing in the top 100 for five years in a row. His first big win as a professional came in 2005 at the PGA Tour's Chrysler Classic of Tucson. In 2006, he won the 2006 WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship, beating fellow golfer Davis Love III.
Winning the U.S. Open Championship
Geoff won his first major championship at the 2006 U.S. Open. This was a huge moment, as he was the first Australian to win a men's golf major since 1995. He finished his final round with amazing shots. He made a difficult 30-foot chip shot on the 17th hole. Then, he saved par on the 18th hole with a six-foot putt.
Other top golfers like Phil Mickelson and Colin Montgomerie needed to make par on the last hole to win. But they both struggled, making double-bogeys. Jim Furyk also needed par to force a playoff but made a bogey. This meant Geoff Ogilvy won the tournament in a very exciting finish!
After this win, Geoff moved into the top 10 of the Official World Golf Rankings. He reached his highest ranking of Number 7 in July 2006 and again in February 2007. He spent over 120 weeks in the top 10, showing how consistently well he played.
More Big Wins and Achievements
In 2008, Geoff won his second World Golf Championship title, the 2008 WGC-CA Championship. This was his first PGA Tour win since his U.S. Open victory. This win helped him climb to Number 5 in the world rankings. By June 2008, he reached Number 3, his highest career ranking.
He continued his success in 2009 by winning the 2009 WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship again. This was his third World Golf Championship title. In January 2010, Geoff won the SBS Championship, which was the first event of the 2010 PGA Tour season.
His next victory came in 2014 at the Barracuda Championship. This tournament uses a special scoring system called Modified Stableford. It was his first win in over four years.

Before turning professional, Geoff had a successful amateur career. He won several important amateur tournaments:
- 1995 Portsea Open Amateur
- 1996 German Amateur Open Championship
- 1997 Victorian Amateur Championship

As a professional, besides his PGA and European Tour wins, he also won:
