Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Sir Geoffrey de Mowbray (died 1300) was an important Scottish nobleman in the 1200s. He held important jobs like the Justiciar of Lothian, which was like a chief judge or governor for a part of Scotland. He was also the Baron of Dalmeny and Lord of Barnbougle and Inverkeithing.

Sir Geoffrey's Life and Role

Geoffrey de Mowbray was chosen for a special task at a meeting in Scone on April 2, 1286. He, along with a bishop and an abbot, was sent to find King Edward I of England in Gascony. Their mission was to ask for the King's advice and protection for Scotland. They met King Edward I on September 15, 1286, in Saintes.

Geoffrey was also one of the people who signed the Treaty of Birgham. This important agreement was made to help Scotland stay independent. It happened after King Alexander III died and his granddaughter Margaret became queen in 1286.

Later, on February 23, 1296, Geoffrey approved another important agreement. This was a treaty between France and Scotland, known as the Auld Alliance. He did this at a Scottish parliament meeting in Dunfermline.

Geoffrey was a close advisor to King John of Scotland. He was part of the King's inner circle. However, on September 25, 1298, King Edward I of England took away Geoffrey's Scottish lands. This happened because Geoffrey had fought against the King of England. The lands were later given back to him.

Geoffrey owned many lands. These included places like Eckford in Roxburgh, Barnbougle and Dalmeny, Inverkeithing, Cessford, Methven, Kellie, and Kirk Michael in Scotland. He also owned Bolton in Cumberland, England. He had inherited Bolton from his uncle, Roger de Mowbray. Geoffrey de Mowbray passed away before June 1300.
