Georg Holtzendorff - Becket Street

Georg Holtzendorff was a talented German painter from the 1800s. He was known for painting landscapes, which are pictures of nature and outdoor scenes. He moved from his home country, Germany, to England because of a big war happening at the time.

Who Was Georg Holtzendorff?

Georg Holtzendorff was born in Saxony, a region in Germany. He became a skilled landscape painter, focusing on beautiful outdoor views. His art captured the natural world around him.

Moving to England

Holtzendorff moved to England to escape the Franco-Prussian War. This was a major conflict between France and Prussia, which was a powerful German kingdom. Moving to England opened up new chances for him to use his artistic skills.

Art for Porcelain

In England, Holtzendorff began working for a famous company called the Royal Crown Derby Porcelain Company. This company made beautiful items from porcelain, like plates and cups. Holtzendorff's job was to sketch the lovely landscapes of Derbyshire. These sketches were then used as designs to decorate the porcelain.

The Gladstone Dessert Service

Holtzendorff's most important work was decorating the Gladstone Dessert Service. This was a special set of porcelain dishes. The Liberal Working Men of Derby gave this gift to the Prime Minister, William Ewart Gladstone, in 1883. A Prime Minister is the main leader of the government in countries like England.

One of Holtzendorff's watercolour paintings is the only study still existing that is linked to the Gladstone service. This painting shows a view of Becket Street in Derby. In the background, you can see the Derby Museum and Art Gallery.
