George Abbitt (also known as George Abbott) was an important early settler in Norwalk, Connecticut. He lived from 1634 to 1689.

Who Was George Abbitt?
George Abbitt was one of the first people to help create the town of Norwalk in Connecticut. He was born in England to his parents, Maurice and Gertrude Abbott. Like many people at that time, he left England to start a new life in America.
Early Life and Journey
When George Abbitt first arrived in America, he settled in a place called Windsor. He worked as an indentured servant. This meant he agreed to work for someone for a set number of years. This was often done to pay for his trip across the ocean.
Settling in Connecticut
During his time in Windsor, George Abbitt faced some challenges. He had difficulties related to trading with local Native American tribes. After this, he moved to Hartford. Then, before the year 1655, he finally moved to Norwalk.
Becoming a Founder
George Abbitt became one of the original people who helped establish Norwalk. He played a part in building the new community from the ground up. This was a big job, as they had to clear land, build homes, and set up a government.
His Legacy
Today, George Abbitt is remembered as a founder of Norwalk. His name is carved on the Founders Stone. This special stone is in the East Norwalk Historical Cemetery. It lists the names of all the important people who helped start the town.
