George Alfred Lawrence (born March 25, 1827 – died September 23, 1876) was a British writer and a barrister. A barrister is a type of lawyer who argues cases in court. He became famous for his exciting adventure novels.

About George Alfred Lawrence

George Alfred Lawrence was born in a place called Buxted, in Sussex, England. He was the oldest child of Reverend Alfred Charnley Lawrence and Lady Emily Mary Finch-Hatton. His mother was related to important noble families.

He went to Rugby School, which is a famous school, and then studied at Balliol College, Oxford University. In 1851, he married Mary Ann Georgiana Kirwan. In 1852, he became a barrister at the Inner Temple, which is a legal society. However, he soon decided to leave law and focus on writing books instead.

In 1857, he published his first novel, Guy Livingstone. He didn't put his name on it at first. This book became very popular. It showed a more intense picture of Rugby School life than other books at the time. He continued to write several more adventure stories. These books often featured a brave and heroic character. This type of hero was great at sports, love, and fighting.

For example, his book Sword and Gown (published in 1859) tells a dramatic story that includes the famous Charge of the Light Brigade battle. Another book, Barren Honour. A Tale (published in 1862), is about a noble gentleman who sadly dies in a shipwreck. People described it as a story of a hero who bravely sacrifices himself.

When the American Civil War started, George Lawrence traveled to America. He wanted to join the Confederate Army. However, he was captured and only set free after he promised to go back to England. In his later years, he traveled a lot. He passed away in Edinburgh, Scotland.
