George Archibald, 1st Baron Archibald CBE (born 21 July 1898 – died 25 February 1975) was an important British politician. He was a member of the Labour Party. A "Baron" is a special title given to someone, making them a member of the nobility.

Early Life and Education

George Archibald was born in Glasgow. His father was George W. Archibald. George went to St George's Road Elementary School. He also attended Alan Glen's High School.

Political Career

George Archibald first tried to become a Member of Parliament (MP) in 1931. He ran for the Labour Party in Birmingham Sparkbrook. However, he lost the election to Leo Amery. This was during a time when the Conservative Party won many seats.

During the Second World War, George Archibald helped the government. From 1944 to 1945, he was in charge of the Ministry of Information. This ministry shared important news and information during the war.

In 1949, he received a special honour. The Labour government led by Clement Attlee made him a "Baron." His full title became Baron Archibald, of Woodside in Glasgow. This meant he became a member of the House of Lords, which is part of the UK Parliament.

From June to October 1951, he held an important role. He served as a leader in the House of Lords. This job helped manage the Labour Party's work there.

Work in Film Industry

After his time in government, George Archibald worked in the film industry. From 1957 to 1966, he was the Chairman of the Federation of British Film Makers. He then became the Deputy President of Film Production of Great Britain. He held this role from 1966 to 1968.

Family Life

Lord Archibald was married two times. His first wife was Dorothy Edwards. They married in 1926. Dorothy passed away in 1960.

In 1961, he married Catherine Edith Mary. She was the daughter of Bonar Law. Bonar Law had been a Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.

George Archibald died in February 1975. He was 76 years old. His son, George Christopher Archibald, inherited his title. However, his son chose to give up the title a few days later. Lady Archibald, his second wife, died in 1992.
