Sir George Bourchier was a brave British soldier. He was born on August 23, 1821, and passed away on March 15, 1898. He reached the high rank of Major-General. This means he was a very important leader in the army.

George Bourchier served in the Bengal Army. This was one of the three main armies in British India. He was also honored as a Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath (KCB). This is a special award for great service.

Early Life and Training

George Bourchier was the son of Reverend Edward Bourchier. He went to a special school called the Addiscombe Military Seminary. This school trained young men to become officers in the British army.

In 1838, he joined the Bengal Artillery. This was a part of the army that used cannons and big guns.

Gwalior Campaign

From 1843 to 1844, he was part of the Gwalior campaign. This was a military operation in India. He was stationed at a place called Punniar during this time.

Indian Rebellion of 1857

A major event in India was the Indian Rebellion of 1857. It is also known as the Indian Mutiny. During this time, George Bourchier played a key role.

He commanded a group of cannons at Thimbu Ghat. He was also present during the Siege of Delhi. This was a very important battle where British forces captured the city of Delhi.

Bourchier also fought in other places. These included Bulandshahr, Alighar, and Agra. He worked with another famous general, Sir Colin Campbell. Together, they helped in the relief of Lucknow and fought at Cawnpur.

Later Commands and Awards

After these events, George Bourchier continued to serve. He was given the rank of Brevet Colonel. This is a temporary higher rank given for good service. He also became a Companion of the Order of the Bath (C.B.).

From 1864 to 1866, he led the Royal Artillery in Bhutan. This was another important command. In 1871, he was in charge of the East Frontier District.

He also commanded a group called the Cachar column. This was during the Lushai Expedition from 1871 to 1872. This expedition was a military journey into a difficult area.

In 1852, he received the K.C.B. award. This meant he was made a Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath. He was also promoted to Major-General. This was a very high rank.

Sir George Bourchier passed away on March 15, 1898. He had a long and distinguished career serving in the British army in India.
