George Elroy Boyd (born June 30, 1952 – died July 7, 2020) was a very important Canadian. He was a talented writer who created plays for the stage. He was also a well-known news anchor. George Boyd made history as the first Black person to be a national news anchor in Canada. He helped launch CBC Newsworld in 1989, where he was one of the first anchors.

George Boyd was born and grew up in Halifax, Nova Scotia. He was one of nine children in his family. From a young age, he showed a talent for writing. He wrote for many different types of media. In 1989, George Boyd became a key part of Canadian television history. He was an original anchor for CBC Newsworld. This was a new 24-hour news channel from the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. Another of his plays, Wade in the Water, was very successful. It was produced by the Black Theatre Workshop in Montreal. This play earned him a nomination for the Montreal English Critics Circle Award. One of his plays, Gideon's Blues, was even turned into a TV drama. It was called The Gospel According to the Blues.

George Boyd lived in Montreal for many years. In 2009, he wrote Le Code Noir. This play was about the life of an 18th-century composer named Joseph Bologne. One of his last projects was a play called The Days Of Douglass. This play focused on the final days of Frederick Douglass, a famous historical figure.

George Boyd passed away on July 7, 2020, in Montreal, Quebec. His work as a news anchor and playwright left a lasting impact. He opened doors for others and told important stories through his art.
