George Braden's Political Journey
Before becoming a politician, George Braden worked with a man named Charles "Bud" Drury. Mr. Drury was a former federal minister. He was looking into how the Northwest Territories could become more self-governing.
George Braden also worked as a Deputy Minister for the Northwest Territories. He worked from Ottawa, Ontario, which is Canada's capital city.
Becoming a Leader
Braden was first elected to the Legislative Assembly of the Northwest Territories in 1979. This assembly is like the parliament for the territory. At that time, the Commissioner of the Northwest Territories was the head of the government. The Commissioner was chosen by the Government of Canada.
In 1980, something big changed. For the first time, the Legislative Assembly got to choose its own Government Leader. They chose George Braden. He served in this role until 1984. He was the second person to hold this important position. The first was Frederick Haultain, way back in 1897.
Making a Difference
George Braden helped make some important changes. He worked to allow more people to be represented in the legislative council. He also helped remove the appointed Commissioner and Deputy Commissioner from the executive council. This meant that elected members could have more control over the territory's affairs. These changes gave more power to the people living in the Northwest Territories.
Later in 2009, Braden took on a new role. He became a Policy Analyst for Dennis Patterson. Mr. Patterson had just been appointed to the Senate of Canada for Nunavut.
Life Outside Politics
From 1994, George Braden owned and was the CEO of his own company. His company was based in Ottawa, Ontario.
He met Lise Beaudry in 1989, and they got married in August 1998. In 2009, they lived in Barrhaven, Ontario. George Braden passed away at home on May 25, 2015, when he was 65 years old.
