Life of George Cholmondeley
George Cholmondeley was the son of George Cholmondeley, 2nd Earl of Cholmondeley. His mother was Elizabeth van Ruyterburgh.
Early Political Career
In 1724, George Cholmondeley was elected to the House of Commons. This is a part of the British Parliament where elected representatives make laws. He represented the area of East Looe until 1727. After that, he represented Windsor from 1727 to 1733.
In 1733, he became the 3rd Earl of Cholmondeley after his father passed away. This meant he moved from the House of Commons to the House of Lords. The House of Lords is another part of the British Parliament, made up of nobles.
Important Government Roles
George Cholmondeley held several important government jobs. His father-in-law was Sir Robert Walpole, who was a very powerful Prime Minister.
- From 1727 to 1729, he was a Lord of the Admiralty. This role involved managing the British Navy.
- From 1735 to 1736, he was a Lord of the Treasury. This meant he helped manage the country's money.
- From 1736 to 1743, he served as Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster. This was a special government position.

Family Life
In 1723, Lord Cholmondeley married Lady Mary Walpole. She was the daughter of the Prime Minister, Robert Walpole, 1st Earl of Orford.
He passed away in June 1770, when he was 67 years old. His oldest son, George Cholmondeley, Viscount Malpas, died before him. So, his grandson, also named George, inherited his titles. This grandson later became the Marquess of Cholmondeley in 1815.
His second son, Robert (1727-1804), started his career in the military. He later left the army and became a minister.
There was an actress named Maria Nossiter. She was the daughter of Lord Cholmondeley's housekeeper. Maria received a good education and had a successful, though short, acting career.
