George Clint (born April 12, 1770 – died May 10, 1854) was a talented English artist. He was known for painting portraits and making engravings. He was especially famous for his artworks showing scenes from plays and actors.

Who Was George Clint?

George Clint was an important English artist. He lived a long life, from 1770 to 1854. He became well-known for his detailed portraits. He also created many engravings, which are like prints made from metal plates.

Early Life and Career

George Clint was born in London, in an area called Covent Garden. His father, Michael Clint, worked as a hairdresser. George went to school in Yorkshire. After school, he started working for a fishmonger. However, he soon left that job.

He then tried working in a lawyer's office. But he didn't like that either. So, he became a house-painter. He even helped paint parts of the famous Westminster Abbey. He also decorated a house designed by the famous architect Christopher Wren. Later, he worked for a bookseller named Thomas Tegg.

Becoming a Famous Artist

George Clint married a farmer's daughter from Berkshire. They had nine children together, five sons and four daughters. Sadly, his wife passed away shortly after their son Alfred was born. Alfred also grew up to be an artist.

Clint started painting tiny portraits called miniatures. He had a studio in London. There, he met a publisher named John Bell. Bell's nephew, Edward Bell, taught George how to engrave. George's first oil painting was a portrait of his wife.

An engraver named Samuel Reynolds suggested he try painting portraits with watercolors. When he didn't get many portrait jobs, he copied famous paintings. He made many copies of works by artists like George Morland.

Around 1816, George Clint's studio became a popular place. Many famous actors and actresses of the time would visit him. This was because he painted many dramatic scenes from plays. One famous painting showed actors in the comedy The Clandestine Marriage.

His Amazing Artworks

George Clint created many different types of art. He was especially skilled at capturing people's likenesses in his portraits. He also made many detailed engravings.

Some of his theatrical portraits were sadly lost in a fire. His painting Falstaff and Mistress Ford can be seen in the Tate Gallery in London.

Engravings and Prints

George Clint's early engravings included The Frightened Horse. He also created The Death of Nelson after a painting by Samuel Drummond. He even made a set of prints based on the famous Raphael cartoons.

He also made a type of print called mezzotints. These included a portrait of William Pitt. He also made prints of famous actresses like Miss Siddons and Lucia Elizabeth Vestris. He created portraits of actors too, such as Edmund Kean and John Liston.

His Artistic Family

George Clint's family had a strong artistic talent. Several of his sons followed in his footsteps. His son, Scipio Clint, became a well-known medallist. A medallist creates medals and coins.

Another son, Raphael Clint, was also an engraver. His youngest son, Alfred Clint, became a marine painter. This means he specialized in painting scenes of the sea and ships.
