Life of Samuel Drummond
Early Life and Training
Samuel Drummond was born in London on December 25, 1766. His father, James Drummond, was a baker. When Samuel was about 13 years old, he started working at sea. He sailed on ships that traveled to places around the Baltic Sea for about six or seven years.
After his time at sea, Samuel worked as a clerk for a short while. But he really wanted to be an artist. So, on July 15, 1791, he joined the Royal Academy Schools. This was a famous art school in London.
Becoming an Artist
Samuel Drummond began his art career by drawing with crayons and painting with oil paints. He worked very hard and quickly became successful. In just a few years, he showed more than 300 of his paintings at the Royal Academy. In 1808, he was chosen to be an associate of the Royal Academy. This was a big honor for an artist.

Samuel Drummond painted many important people of his time. Some of the famous people who sat for his portraits included:
- Walter Scott, a very well-known writer.
- Elizabeth Fry, who worked to help people in prisons.
- Marc Isambard Brunel, a famous engineer.
He also painted many brave navy officers, like Admiral Edward Pellew and Captain William Rogers.
After the year 1800, Drummond started painting large oil pictures about the history of the British navy. These paintings showed exciting sea battles and important events. Some of his famous marine paintings include:
- The Battle of the Nile, 1st August 1798

Towards the end of his life, Samuel Drummond continued to paint. However, he sometimes had money problems. The Royal Academy often helped him out financially. Samuel had many children from his three marriages, and most of them also became artists. He had five daughters and one son who followed in his footsteps.
