George Fowler (born October 26, 1860 – died May 14, 1934) was a talented New Zealand cricketer. He played first-class cricket for the Nelson team from 1879 to 1887. George wasn't the only cricketer in his family; his brothers Samuel and Louis also played for Nelson.

George Fowler's Cricket Highlights

George Fowler was known for his amazing bowling skills. He achieved some truly remarkable results, especially when playing in his home city of Nelson.

Unstoppable Bowling Performances

In a match against the Wellington team in 1883-84, George was incredible. He bowled all the way through both parts of the game without a break. He took 5 wickets for only 10 runs in the first innings and 5 wickets for 13 runs in the second. This meant he took a total of 10 wickets for just 23 runs in the whole match! In that game, 40 wickets fell, but only 183 runs were scored. Nelson won by 39 runs, thanks to George's efforts.

A few years later, in 1887-88, George had another fantastic game against Wellington. He took 6 wickets for only 9 runs and then 5 wickets for 16 runs. This helped Nelson win the match by nine wickets, and the entire game finished in just one day! In that quick match, 31 wickets fell, and only 159 runs were scored.

Playing Against the Australians

In 1880-81, Nelson played against the touring Australians. George Fowler took 4 wickets for 32 runs in that match. He also showed he could bat, scoring 16 runs in Nelson's second innings. This was the highest score for Nelson in that innings. Only his brother Samuel scored more runs in the entire match.

Top Batting Score

George hit his highest score in a match against the Auckland team in 1882-83. He scored 28 runs in Nelson's second innings. This was the second-highest individual score of the whole match. He also took 8 wickets in that game, but despite his great performance, Nelson lost by just 4 runs.

Career Bowling Figures

It's a bit tricky to know George Fowler's exact bowling numbers for his whole career. This is because some details from his very first first-class match are missing. However, we know he took 49 wickets in total. His bowling average was somewhere between 6.38 and 6.87, which is very impressive!

Later Life

George Fowler lived in a place called Spring Grove, which is near Brightwater. Later, he and his wife, Kate, moved to Blenheim. Kate passed away in May 1923, and George died in May 1934.
