George Gordon, Lord Haddo was a Scottish nobleman born on 28 January 1764. He was the eldest son of George Gordon, 3rd Earl of Aberdeen. Lord Haddo was also a Freemason, which means he was part of a historic social organization. He passed away on 2 October 1791.

His Family Life

On 18 June 1782, Lord Haddo married Charlotte Baird. She was the sister of Sir David Baird, 1st Baronet. Together, George and Charlotte had seven children. Their children grew up to have important roles in society.

  • Hon. George Hamilton-Gordon (1784–1860) became the 4th Earl of Aberdeen. He later served as the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1852 to 1855.
  • Hon. William Gordon (1784–1858) was a politician and a high-ranking naval officer called a vice-admiral.
  • Hon. Sir Alexander Gordon (1786–1815) was a lieutenant-colonel in the army. Sadly, he was killed during the famous Battle of Waterloo.
  • Lady Alice Gordon (1787–1847) was a Lady-in-Waiting to Princess Sophia of Gloucester. She never married.
  • Hon. Charles Gordon (1790–1835) also became a soldier.
  • Hon. Sir Robert Gordon (1791–1847) worked as a diplomat, representing his country abroad.
  • Hon. Sir John Gordon (1792–1869) became an Admiral, a very senior naval officer.

Important Public Roles

Lord Haddo held a significant position in the Grand Lodge of Scotland. He was the Grand Master from 1784 to 1786. This role meant he was the leader of the Freemasons in Scotland during that time.

One of his notable actions as Grand Master was laying the foundation stone for the South Bridge, Edinburgh. This important event happened on 1 August 1785. The South Bridge is a major structure in Edinburgh, Scotland.

His Legacy

Lord Haddo passed away in 1791, before his father. When his father died in 1801, the title of Earl of Aberdeen went to Lord Haddo's eldest son, George.

Even today, Lord Haddo is remembered in a special way. Haddo Peak, a mountain in the Canadian Rocky Mountains, was named in his honor.
