Sir George's Army Career
Sir George had a long career in the military. From 1843 to 1851, he was a captain in the 34th Regiment of Foot. During this time, he was stationed in different places like Athlone, Ireland, and Corfu.
Leading the Volunteers
Later, from 1868 to 1885, he became a Lieutenant-Colonel. He led the Roxburgh and Selkirk Rifle Volunteers. He also held a high position as a Brigadier General in the Royal Company of Archers.
Serving in Parliament
In 1874, Sir George decided to enter politics. He was elected as a Member of Parliament, often called an MP. He represented the area of Roxburghshire. An MP is someone who is chosen by people to speak for them in the country's government.
Losing His Seat
However, Sir George's time as an MP did not last very long. In the next election, which happened in 1880, he lost his seat. This meant he was no longer the MP for Roxburghshire.
The Baronet Title
A Baronet is a special title in Britain, similar to a knight, but it can be passed down through families. In 1836, when Sir George's father, John James Scott-Douglas, passed away, George became the 4th Baronet. This meant he inherited the title.
Passing on the Title
When Sir George died, the Baronet title was passed on to his second son, George Brisbane Scott Douglas. This is how the title continued in their family.
Sir George's Family Life
Sir George met his wife, Mariquita Juana Petronilla, in Gibraltar. She was the oldest daughter of Don Francisco Serran Sanches de Piña. They got married in 1851.
Their Children
Together, Sir George and Mariquita had six children. Sadly, one of their children died when they were very young. Their oldest son, James, was supposed to inherit the Baronet title after his father. However, James was killed on 3 July 1879 while he was traveling in Zululand. Because of this, the title went to his second son instead.
