James Henry Robert Innes-Ker (born September 5, 1839 – died October 23, 1892) was the 7th Duke of Roxburghe. He became Duke after his father, the 6th Duke, passed away.

His Early Life

James Henry Robert Innes-Ker was born on September 5, 1839. His parents were James Innes-Ker, 6th Duke of Roxburghe and Susanna Dalbiac. His mother, Susanna, was the only child of Sir Charles Dalbiac. She also worked for Queen Victoria until her death in 1895.

James had an older sister, Lady Susan Harriet Innes-Ker. She married Sir James Suttie. He also had younger siblings: Lady Charlotte Isabella Innes-Ker and Lord Charles John Innes-Ker.

His Career and Public Service

James Innes-Ker was involved in politics. He was a member of the Liberal Party.

Serving in Parliament

From 1870 to 1874, he served as a Member of Parliament for Roxburghshire. A Member of Parliament is someone elected to represent a specific area in the country's main law-making body.

Lord Lieutenant of Roxburghshire

Later, from 1884 until his death in 1892, he held the position of Lord Lieutenant of Roxburghshire. A Lord Lieutenant is the King or Queen's personal representative in a county or area.

His Family Life

On June 11, 1874, James married Anne Emily Spencer-Churchill. Anne was the fourth daughter of the 7th Duke of Marlborough. Her mother was Lady Frances Vane-Stewart.

Anne also worked for Queen Victoria. She held important roles like Mistress of the Robes and Lady of the Bedchamber.

Together, James and Anne had seven children: three boys and four girls.
