James Henry Robert Innes-Ker, 6th Duke of Roxburghe (born 12 July 1816 – died 23 April 1879) was a Scottish nobleman. He held important titles and roles in Scotland during his lifetime.
Early Life and Education
James Innes-Ker was the only surviving child of the 5th Duke of Roxburghe and Harriet Charlewood. When he was just seven years old, in 1823, he inherited his father's important titles.
He received a good education, first at Eton College, a famous boarding school. After that, he studied at Christ Church, Oxford, which is part of the well-known University of Oxford.
Career and Public Service
In 1840, James Innes-Ker became a Knight of the Thistle. This is a very special honor given in Scotland, recognizing people who have done great things.
He also served as a Lieutenant General of the Royal Company of Archers. This is a ceremonial bodyguard for the King or Queen in Scotland. From 1873 until his death in 1879, he was the Lord Lieutenant of Berwickshire. A Lord Lieutenant is the King's or Queen's personal representative in a county. He also helped lead the National Bank of Scotland as a governor.
Family Life
On 29 December 1836, James married Susanna Stephania Dalbiac. She was the only child of Lieutenant General Sir James Charles Dalbiac.
James and Susanna had four children together:
- Lady Susan Harriet Innes-Ker (1837–1909)
- James Henry Robert Innes-Ker, 7th Duke of Roxburghe (1839–1892)
- Lady Charlotte Isabella Innes-Ker (1841–1881)
- Lord Charles John Innes-Ker (1842–1919)
Later Life and Legacy
The Duke of Roxburghe passed away in Genoa, Italy, on 23 April 1879. After a funeral at Floors Castle, his home, he was buried in Bowden. His eldest son, James, inherited his titles and estates.
His wife, the Dowager Duchess, continued to serve as a member of Queen Victoria's staff until she died in 1895.
