George Loening Hickenlooper III (May 25, 1963 – October 29, 2010) was an American filmmaker. He was known for directing both real-life stories (documentaries) and fictional movies.

Growing Up: George Hickenlooper's Early Life
George Hickenlooper was born in St. Louis, Missouri, in 1963. His mom, Barbara Jo Wenger, was a social worker and stage actress. His dad, George Loening Hickenlooper, Jr., was a teacher and playwright. George also had a famous relative: the conductor Leopold Stokowski was his great-uncle by marriage.
When George was in high school at St. Louis University High, he was part of a group of friends who loved making films. They called themselves the "Splicers." This early interest showed his passion for movies from a young age.

George Hickenlooper became a well-known director of both documentaries and narrative films.
Award-Winning Documentaries
His first full-length documentary was called Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmaker's Apocalypse. This film explored how the famous movie Apocalypse Now was made. It won many important awards, including:
- The National Board of Review award for "Best Documentary."
- An American Cinema Editors award for "Best Edited Documentary."
- Two Academy of Television Arts and Sciences awards for directing and editing.
- The International Documentary Association award.
George Hickenlooper himself won an Emmy for his directing work on this film.
Another notable documentary he directed was Mayor of the Sunset Strip in 2003.
Narrative Films and Family Connections
George Hickenlooper also directed many fictional movies. One of his last films was Casino Jack in 2010.
Interestingly, George's cousin, John Hickenlooper, appeared in Casino Jack. At the time, John was the mayor of Denver. Later, John became the Governor of Colorado from 2011 to 2019. In 2020, he was elected to represent Colorado in the US Senate.
Besides making films, George Hickenlooper also wrote a book. It was published in 1991 and was titled Reel Conversations.
