George DeWitt Lynch III (born September 3, 1970) is an American former professional basketball player. He played in the National Basketball Association (NBA) from 1993 to 2005. George was known for his strong defense and rebounding skills.

Early Life and High School Basketball

George Lynch was born in 1970 in Roanoke, Virginia. He was born two months early and spent time in an incubator. George played basketball at Patrick Henry High. His team won the Virginia State Championship in 1988. For his final year of high school, he moved to Flint Hill School. This move helped him get noticed by colleges.

College Career at North Carolina

George played college basketball for four years at the University of North Carolina. He played under the famous coach Dean Smith. George was a great defensive player. He averaged about 12.5 points and almost eight rebounds per game. He also ranked second in UNC history for steals per game.

In his second year, George helped his team reach the NCAA Final Four. As a team captain, he led North Carolina to win the NCAA championship in 1993. He was also named to the All-Final Four Tournament team.

Playing in the NBA

Joining the Los Angeles Lakers

After college, George Lynch was picked by the Los Angeles Lakers in the 1993 NBA draft. He was the 12th player chosen overall. He played for the Lakers until 1996. He was the last Laker to wear jersey number 34 before it was given to Shaquille O'Neal.

Time with the Grizzlies and 76ers

In 1996, George was traded to the Vancouver Grizzlies. He played there for two seasons. In 1999, he joined the Philadelphia 76ers. With players like Allen Iverson and coach Larry Brown, George helped the 76ers become a very strong defensive team. He played a key role when the 76ers reached the 2001 NBA Finals.

Later NBA Teams

After three seasons with the 76ers, George was traded to the Charlotte Hornets in 2001. The Hornets later moved and became the New Orleans Hornets. George played for them until he retired from professional basketball in 2005.

Life After Playing Basketball

After his NBA career, George Lynch continued to be involved in basketball. He worked as a personal trainer. In 2006, he started a non-profit youth basketball program called Flight Nine Basketball in Dallas. He ran this program until 2010.

George also worked with college basketball teams. He was an assistant coach at Southern Methodist University from 2012 to 2013. He also worked at UC Irvine as a strength coach. In 2018, he became the head coach for Clark Atlanta University. His coaching contract ended in 2020.

More recently, in October 2022, George Lynch joined the TV broadcasting team for the Charlotte Hornets. He works as a studio analyst, sharing his basketball knowledge.
