George DeWitt Lynch III (born September 3, 1970) is a former American professional basketball player. He played in the National Basketball Association (NBA) from 1993 to 2005. George was known for his strong defense and rebounding skills.

Early Life & High School Basketball
George Lynch was born in Roanoke, Virginia, on September 3, 1970. He was born two months early and spent time in an incubator. George grew up in Roanoke and played basketball at Patrick Henry High. His team won the Virginia State Championship in 1988. For his last year of high school, he moved to Flint Hill School. This was a special school that helped students get ready for college.
College Career at North Carolina
George played basketball for four years at the University of North Carolina. His coach was the famous Dean Smith. George was known for his amazing defense. He averaged about 12.5 points and almost eight rebounds per game. He also had 1.7 steals per game, which put him second on UNC's all-time list for steals.
In his second year, George and his team reached the NCAA Final Four. As a team captain, he helped lead North Carolina to win the NCAA championship in 1993. He was also named to the All-Final Four Tournament team.
Playing in the NBA
After college, George Lynch was picked by the Los Angeles Lakers in the 1993 NBA draft. He was the 12th player chosen overall. He played for the Lakers until 1996. Then, he was traded to the Vancouver Grizzlies. This trade helped the Lakers make space to sign another famous player, Shaquille O'Neal.
In 1999, George joined the Philadelphia 76ers. He played a big part in their strong defense. With teammates like Allen Iverson and coach Larry Brown, the 76ers had one of the best defenses in the league. George and the 76ers made it all the way to the 2001 NBA Finals.
After three seasons with the 76ers, George was traded to the Charlotte Hornets in 2001. He played there until he retired from basketball in 2005.
Life After Playing Basketball
After his NBA career, George Lynch continued to be involved in basketball. He worked as a personal trainer. In 2006, he started a non-profit program called Flight Nine Basketball in Dallas. This program helped young people learn basketball.
George also worked as a coach. He was an assistant coach at Southern Methodist University (SMU) and UC Irvine. In 2018, he became the head coach for Clark Atlanta University. He coached there until 2020. In 2022, George joined the Charlotte Hornets' TV team as a studio analyst, talking about basketball games.
