About Lord George Murray

Lord George Murray was an important figure in Scottish society and British politics. He inherited noble titles and played a role in the government of his time.

Early Life and Family

George Murray was the oldest son of John Murray, 4th Earl of Dunmore, and Lady Charlotte Stewart. He grew up in a noble family.

In 1803, Lord Dunmore married Lady Susan. She was the daughter of Archibald Hamilton, 9th Duke of Hamilton. They had several children. Their second son, Sir Charles Murray, became a well-known diplomat, which means he represented his country in other nations.

Lord Dunmore passed away in November 1836 when he was 74 years old. His oldest son, Alexander, took over his titles. Lady Dunmore, his wife, died later in May 1846, at the age of 71.

A Career in Politics

Lord George Murray started his political career in the House of Commons in 1800. The House of Commons is one of the two main parts of the UK Parliament, where elected representatives make laws. He represented the area of Liskeard until 1802.

In 1809, he inherited the title of Earl of Dunmore from his father. This made him the 5th Earl of Dunmore. Later, in 1831, he was given another special title: Baron Dunmore. This new title was part of the Peerage of the United Kingdom, which is a system of noble ranks. Being a Baron meant he automatically got a seat in the House of Lords. The House of Lords is the other main part of the UK Parliament, made up of appointed members and noble title holders.

Lord Dunmore died at a place called Glen Finart in Argyllshire, Scotland, on November 11, 1836.
