George Maurice Nightingale (born June 5, 1893 – died December 11, 1964) was an important person from England. He moved to Newfoundland and became a machinist, which is someone who works with machines. Later, he became a politician. He represented the area of St. John's North in the Newfoundland House of Assembly from 1956 to 1962.

Early Life and Moving to Newfoundland

George Nightingale was born in Liverpool, England. His parents were Robert and Harriet Nightingale. He went to school at the Liverpool Technical Institute, where he learned about machines and engineering.

In 1911, when he was about 18 years old, George moved to St. John's, Newfoundland. He worked for an engineering company there.

Wartime Work and Starting a Business

During World War I, from 1915 to 1918, George Nightingale worked as a mechanic. He helped with planes for the Royal Flying Corps, which was an early air force.

After the war, he started his own businesses. He opened a garage to fix cars and also a car dealership to sell them.

Family Life

George Nightingale married Violet Noseworthy. They had three children together. Their daughter, Florence, later became a well-known actress named Florence Paterson.

Helping the Community in St. John's

George Nightingale was very involved in his community. He served on the St. John's City Council as an alderman. An alderman is like a city council member who helps make decisions for the city. He was on the council from 1949 to 1961.

During his time on the city council, he also served as the deputy mayor. This means he was the second-in-command to the mayor. He also worked as a traffic commissioner, helping to manage traffic in the city.

In 1961, he tried to be reelected to the city council but was not successful.

Serving in the Provincial Government

George Nightingale also became a member of the provincial government. He was elected to the Newfoundland assembly in 1956. The assembly is where laws are made for the whole province. He was reelected in 1959, serving until 1962.
