George Stewart was born on December 29, 1958. He is a well-known American football coach. Most recently, he worked as an assistant head coach and offensive analyst for the Los Angeles Chargers. This team plays in the National Football League (NFL). George Stewart has been coaching in the NFL since 1989. Before that, he spent several years coaching at the college level. He coached wide receivers for the Minnesota Vikings for ten years. In 2017, he became the assistant head coach and special teams coordinator for the San Diego Chargers.

George Stewart's College Coaching Career

Stewart started his coaching journey in 1983. He began as a graduate assistant at the University of Arkansas. A graduate assistant is someone who helps a coach while also studying for an advanced degree. He worked under Lou Holtz, who used to be his coach when Stewart played for Arkansas.

The next year, Stewart followed Coach Holtz to the University of Minnesota. There, he became the team's offensive line coach. In 1986, Stewart joined Holtz again, this time at Notre Dame. He became the team's linebackers coach.

In Stewart's last season with Notre Dame, the team had an amazing record. They won all 12 of their games (12-0). They also beat West Virginia in the Fiesta Bowl. This victory made them the national champions in college football!

George Stewart's NFL Coaching Career

George Stewart began coaching in the NFL in 1989. His first NFL job was with the Pittsburgh Steelers. He worked under Coach Chuck Noll as a special teams coach. Special teams are groups of players used for specific plays like kickoffs and punts. He stayed with the Steelers from 1989 to 1991.

After Pittsburgh, he moved to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He coached there from 1992 to 1995. In Tampa Bay, he coached both tight ends and special teams. Tight ends are players who can block and catch passes. In 1995, he focused only on special teams.

Next, Stewart coached for seven years with the San Francisco 49ers. This was from 1996 to 2002. For his first four years with the 49ers, he coached special teams. But in 2000, his role changed. George became the team's wide receivers coach for his final three years there. Wide receivers are players who run routes and catch passes.

He continued coaching wide receivers for four years with the Atlanta Falcons (2003–2006). Then, he spent ten seasons coaching wide receivers for the Minnesota Vikings (2007–2016).

From 2017, Stewart worked for the Los Angeles Chargers. He was their special teams coordinator and assistant head coach under Anthony Lynn. He left the Chargers after the 2020 season.
