George Lester Tuccaro (born May 12, 1950) is a respected Canadian leader who served as the Commissioner of the Northwest Territories. The Commissioner is the official representative of the Canadian government in the territory, similar to a lieutenant governor in a province. He held this important job from 2010 to 2016.

A Life in Broadcasting and Public Service
George Tuccaro was born in northern Alberta and is a member of the Mikisew Cree First Nation. His career began in 1971 when he started working for CBC North Radio in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories. As an Announcer-Operator, he was one of the voices people heard on the radio every day.
Promoting Indigenous Languages
In 1979, Mr. Tuccaro took a job with the Canadian government as a communications officer. Two years later, he returned to CBC North to take on a new challenge. He became the Coordinator of Aboriginal Languages Programming.
In this role, he worked hard to make sure Indigenous languages were heard on the radio. He also produced a famous radio documentary about the serious challenges facing young people in northern Canada. His work on this documentary received praise from around the world.
From 1990 to 1991, he helped northern artists get more recognition. He later became a well-known host for CBC, hosting the radio show Trail's End and anchoring the TV news program Northbeat.
Becoming Commissioner
In 2002, Mr. Tuccaro retired from the CBC to start his own communications company. His work and dedication have been recognized with several awards, including the Queen Elizabeth II Golden Jubilee Medal.
On May 12, 2010, he was appointed as the Commissioner of the Northwest Territories, a position he held for six years.

Mr. Tuccaro is married to his wife, Marilyn. They have two children, a son named Daryl and a daughter named Amanda.
