Robert R. McLeod, born in 1952, is a Canadian politician who used to be a leader in the Northwest Territories. He was a member of the Legislative Assembly of the Northwest Territories (like a local parliament) from 2007 to 2019. He also served as the 12th premier of the Northwest Territories from October 26, 2011, to October 24, 2019. A premier is like the head of the government for a territory.
Bob McLeod's Early Life and Education
Bob McLeod was born in 1952 and grew up in Fort Providence, Northwest Territories. He went to the University of Alberta and earned a degree in business. He also studied administrative management at the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology. Later, he completed a special program at the Royal Military College of Canada in Kingston, Ontario, which focused on national and international topics. Before becoming a politician, he worked for the Canadian government and also for the government of the Northwest Territories.
Bob McLeod's Journey in Politics
Bob McLeod decided to run for a seat in the Legislative Assembly of the Northwest Territories. He was elected in the 2007 Northwest Territories general election. He won against two other people, getting more than 60% of the votes in Yellowknife South. After the election, Bob McLeod was chosen to be part of the cabinet. This meant he was in charge of different areas like Human Resources, Industry, Tourism, Investment, and Energy.
McLeod ran for re-election in the 2011 Northwest Territories general election. He won without anyone running against him, which is called winning by "acclamation." After this, he became the 12th Premier of the Northwest Territories. He was re-elected as both premier and a member of the Legislative Assembly in the 2015 Northwest Territories general election. This made him the first premier of the Northwest Territories to serve two full terms since 1902. He became the longest-serving Premier after Brad Wall stepped down on February 2, 2018.
On September 6, 2019, Bob McLeod announced that he would not run for re-election again.
His brother, Michael McLeod, was also a member of the Legislative Assembly from 1999 to 2011. Michael is currently a member of the Parliament of Canada, representing the Northwest Territories. He was first elected in 2015 and is part of the Liberal Party of Canada.
