Margaret M. Thom was a very important leader in Canada's Northwest Territories. She was the commissioner of the Northwest Territories, which is like a special representative for the Canadian government in that region. She was born in 1951.
Before becoming the Commissioner, Margaret Thom was the Deputy Commissioner from 2005 to 2011. She was appointed to her second term as Commissioner in June 2022, and her term ended in May 2024.

Margaret Thom grew up in Fort Providence, a community in the Northwest Territories. She is from an Indigenous family.
Before her work in government, she had many different jobs. In the 1990s, she went to Aurora College to study counselling. After her studies, she became a counsellor at Deh Gáh School in Fort Providence. This shows her dedication to helping young people and her community.

- In 2017, she became a Dame of Justice of The Most Venerable Order of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem. This is a very old and respected order that focuses on health and humanitarian work. She was also the Vice Prior of the Order in the Northwest Territories.
- Also in 2017, she was given the Order of the Northwest Territories. This is the highest honour given by the Northwest Territories government.
- In 2024, she received the King Charles III Coronation Medal. This medal was given to people who made significant contributions during the coronation of King Charles III.
