Caroline Cochrane is a Canadian politician who led the Northwest Territories as its 13th Premier. She served in this important role from 2019 to 2023. Caroline Cochrane is also notable for being the second woman to become Premier of the Northwest Territories. The first was Nellie Cournoyea, who served from 1991 to 1995.

Caroline Cochrane's Early Life and Education
Caroline Cochrane was born in Flin Flon, Manitoba, in 1960. When she was just three years old, her family moved to Yellowknife, where she grew up. She went to college and earned a degree in social work in 1999. This degree was from the University College of the Cariboo, which is now called Thompson Rivers University (TRU) in Kamloops, British Columbia. In 2023, her old university, TRU, recognized her as a special former student. They gave her an award for her public service.
Before Becoming a Politician
Before she was elected to the government, Caroline Cochrane was the CEO of the Centre for Northern Families. This organization helps families in Yellowknife and is run by the Yellowknife Women's Society. Her work there focused on social services, helping people in the community.
Her Time in Politics
Caroline Cochrane first became involved in politics in 2015. She was elected to the Legislative Assembly of the Northwest Territories during the 2015 Northwest Territories general election. She represented the area known as Range Lake.
Becoming Premier
In October 2019, Caroline Cochrane was chosen to be the Premier of the Northwest Territories. She competed against three other candidates. After several rounds of voting by secret ballot, she won the election. This made her the leader of the government for the territory.
Retirement from Politics
After serving one term as Premier and two terms as a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA), Caroline Cochrane decided to retire from politics. She announced her retirement in September 2023. She did not run for re-election in the 2023 Northwest Territories general election.
