George Turner (born April 2, 1841 – died March 29, 1910) was an English artist who painted beautiful landscapes. He was also a farmer. People sometimes called him "Derbyshire's John Constable" because his paintings were as famous as those by the well-known artist John Constable.
George Turner's Life and Art
George Turner was born in a place called Cromford, in Derbyshire, England. Later, his family moved to Derby. His father, Thomas Turner, was a tailor who loved art. He encouraged young George to learn about art and music. George mostly taught himself how to paint and became a professional artist and art teacher.
George Turner lived in Derbyshire his whole life. In 1865, he married Eliza Lakin (1837 - 1900). They lived at Walnut Farm in Barrow upon Trent, where George worked as a part-time farmer. They had four children together.
After Eliza passed away in 1900, George moved to Kirk Ireton. He later married another artist named Kate Stevens Smith (1871-1964). They made their home in Idridgehay, where George died in 1910. George's son, William Lakin Turner (1867-1929), also became a famous painter of oil landscapes.
Most of George Turner's paintings show the beautiful countryside of Derbyshire, where he lived. His art captures what old English villages and farms looked like before modern changes. His paintings were shown in art galleries in Nottingham and Birmingham. George Turner was also part of the Art Committee at the Derby Museum and Art Gallery. This museum still has paintings by both George and his son.
