George Washington Brimhall (born November 14, 1814 – died September 30, 1895) was an important leader and politician in Utah Territory. He was the father of George H. Brimhall, who also became a well-known person.

George W. Brimhall's Early Life

George Washington Brimhall was born in New York. His parents were Sylvanus Brimhall and Lydia Ann Guiteau. His family lived near Canada Creek.

Moving West

In 1827, his family moved to Olean Point, New York. Later, they moved to Melville, New York. They cut down trees and prepared lumber there. The Brimhalls then loaded the lumber onto a boat. They traveled down the Allegheny River to Pittsburgh. After selling the lumber, they went down the Ohio River to Indiana. In 1837, George moved with his family to McHenry County, Illinois.

Becoming a Member of the Church

In 1842, George Brimhall joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Illinois. For the next two years, he served as a Mormon missionary. He shared his beliefs in McHenry and nearby areas.

Moving to Nauvoo

In March 1844, George moved to Nauvoo, Illinois. Soon after, he went to Knoxville, Illinois. There, he met Lucretia Metcalf. They got married in July 1845. Lucretia did not want to move west with the other members of the Church. George hoped that if he went to Utah, she would join him later with their three children. He left in 1850. However, after arriving in Utah, he learned that his marriage had ended.

Life in Utah and Public Service

In 1850, George Brimhall was sent to Iron County, Utah. This was part of the Iron Mission. Brigham Young organized this effort. The goal was to help Utah Territory's economy grow.

Serving in Government

In 1852, George Brimhall was chosen to be part of the Utah Territorial Legislature. This was like a local government. He served for three terms, which means three periods of time. Early that year, he married Rachel Ann Meyer.

Moving to Ogden

In 1854, George Brimhall moved to Ogden, Utah. He served on the City Council there for three years. This meant he helped make decisions for the city.

Later Years and Family Life

In 1863, George Brimhall moved to Salt Lake City. The next year, in 1864, he was asked to join a group. This group helped settle St. George, Utah and the areas around it.

Living in Spanish Fork

George Brimhall later moved to Spanish Fork, Utah. He lived there for the rest of his life. He passed away in Spanish Fork.

Family and Church Service

George Brimhall and his wife Rachel had ten children together. He served for many years as a patriarch in the Utah Stake. A stake is a large group of Church congregations. At that time, the Utah Stake included all of Utah County, Utah. He held this important position until he died.
