Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Georges Sari (born Georgia Sarivaxevani) was a famous Greek writer and actress. She was born in Athens, Greece, on August 22, 1925. Her mother was French, and her father was Greek. Georges grew up in Greece. She was still in school when World War II began in 1940.

Life and Career of Georges Sari

During World War II, Georges Sari joined the Resistance. This group fought for freedom against the Nazi occupation. She later said that this time, even with its dangers, felt like a time of "happiness and freedom" because they were all working towards one goal: liberation.

After the war, Georges Sari continued her acting lessons. However, the Greek Civil War started soon after World War II. During this conflict, she was injured by a bomb. In 1947, she had to leave Greece and live in Paris, France, for a while. There, she worked different jobs and studied acting.

Georges Sari returned to Greece with her family in 1962. She continued acting in plays until a time when the army took control of the country, known as the Military Junta. At this point, she and other actors decided to stop acting as a way to protest. That summer, she wrote her first book, The Treasure of Vaghia. She started writing it as a game with the children around her.

Georges Sari then decided to focus on writing. She felt that writing gave her more freedom than acting. She said, "In writing, I discovered all that I could not find in the theater." She felt she had full control over her books.

She wrote many books, especially for children and young adults. In 1994, she won an award for the best children's book for Ninet. This book was partly about her own sister. She also received awards from the Greek Cycle of Books in 1995 and 1999. In 1988, she was nominated for the Hans Christian Andersen Award, which is a very important award for children's authors. As an actress, she was also nominated for an award at the Thessaloniki Film Festival.
