Georgi Purvanov Damyanov (Bulgarian: Георги Първанов Дамянов; born September 23, 1892 – died November 27, 1958) was an important Bulgarian politician. He was a member of the Bulgarian Communist Party. He held high-ranking positions in Bulgaria during a time when the country was a communist state.

Early Life and Political Start

Georgi Damyanov was born in a village called Lopushna. This village is close to a city now known as Montana. He joined a political group in 1912. This group was called the Bulgarian Social Democratic Workers' Party. Later, this group became the Bulgarian Communist Party.

Important Roles in Government

Damyanov became a very important person in the Bulgarian government. He served as the Defence Minister. This means he was in charge of the country's military. He held this job from 1946 to 1950. This was during the early years of Bulgaria's communist rule.

Head of State

On May 27, 1950, Georgi Damyanov was chosen for an even higher position. He became the Chairman of the Presidium of the National Assembly. This role made him the official head of state for Bulgaria. He kept this important job for eight years. He served until his death in 1958.

Power Behind the Scenes

Even though Damyanov was the official head of state, other leaders held a lot of power. These leaders were the first secretaries of the Communist Party. First, Vulko Chervenkov was very powerful. Later, Todor Zhivkov took over as the main leader. They made many of the big decisions for the country.

Georgi Damyanov passed away on November 27, 1958. He died in Sofia, which is the capital city of Bulgaria.
