The Bulgarian Communist Party (BCP) was a very important political party in Bulgaria. It was the main party that ruled the country from 1946 until 1990. This means they were in charge of almost everything in Bulgaria during that time.

In 1944, the party took control of the government. They replaced the old system led by a tsar (a type of king).

A key leader of the party was Todor Zhivkov. He led both the party and Bulgaria for a very long time, from 1954 to 1989. He was the longest-serving leader in any of the Eastern Bloc countries. The party's first leader was Dimitar Blagoev.

On December 11, 1989, the leader Petar Mladenov announced a big change. He said the party was giving up its special right to always be in charge. In 1990, the party became much more moderate. It was no longer a communist party. In April 1990, the party changed its name to the Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP).
