Georgia City was once a small town located in Jasper County, Missouri, in the United States. It was about 15 miles north of a bigger city called Joplin. Today, Georgia City no longer exists as a town.
History of Georgia City
Georgia City was started in January 1868 by a person named John C. Guinn. He named the town after his home state, Georgia. By March 1869, the town had grown to about 200 people. James Clayton Cox also helped to found the town.
A post office, which is where people send and receive mail, was opened in Georgia City in 1870. This post office served the town for many years, staying open until 1904.
The town was located in a specific area of land, near where Oak Road meets County Road 270 today. This spot is about four miles east of another town called Asbury. You can find its exact location using these coordinates: 37°16′26″N 94°32′36″W / 37.27394°N 94.54329°W.
The Town's Decline
Over time, the number of people living in Georgia City began to shrink. By 1883, the population had dropped to only 50 people. By 1912, the town had mostly disappeared, with very few people left.
In February 1930, Georgia City officially stopped being a town. Lottie Guinn Young, who was the daughter of the town's founder, asked the county court to close the town's streets and alleys. This meant the land could go back to being used as farmland.
Today, the only thing that remains of Georgia City is the Georgia City Cemetery. This cemetery is located at 37°17′22″N 94°32′31″W / 37.28950°N 94.54190°W.
