Georgian Peaks Club facts for kids

Georgian Peaks is a special private ski resort located near Thornbury, Ontario, in Canada. It's built on a long, steep ridge called the Niagara Escarpment. Unlike many ski hills, Georgian Peaks is a private club, which means you usually need to be a member to ski there.

This resort is famous for having the highest "vertical drop" in Ontario. The vertical drop is the difference in height from the very top of the ski hill to its base. At Georgian Peaks, this drop is about 250 meters (820 feet)! This makes it a great place for more experienced skiers looking for a challenge.

What Makes Georgian Peaks Special?

Because of its impressive height, Georgian Peaks can host major ski competitions. These include official races approved by the International Ski Federation (FIS). Two types of exciting races held here are Slalom and Giant Slalom. In these races, skiers zoom down the hill, weaving around colorful gates at high speeds.

The resort has 22 named ski runs, which are the paths skiers take down the mountain. To get to the top, skiers use four different chairlifts. Georgian Peaks is known for its tougher slopes, offering a different experience compared to some other nearby ski areas like Blue Mountain.

Facing the Weather: The Tornado

On August 20, 2009, Georgian Peaks experienced a powerful F2 tornado. An F2 tornado is a strong type of tornado that can cause significant damage. The club was hit directly, and there was a lot of damage to the property.

However, the people at Georgian Peaks worked hard to fix everything. They repaired all the damage, and the club was ready and open for skiers on its usual opening day that winter. This shows how resilient the resort is!
