She came from an important family involved in politics. Lady Georgiana became one of the best Roman Catholic writers in England during the 1800s.

About Georgiana Fullerton

Early Life

Lady Georgiana Charlotte Leveson-Gower was born at her family's home, Tixall Hall, in Staffordshire, England. She was the second daughter of Lord Granville Leveson-Gower. Her mother was Lady Harriet Elizabeth Cavendish. Georgiana was baptized into the Anglican Church on October 10, 1812.

She spent many of her younger years living in Paris, France. Her father worked there as the English ambassador. While in Paris, she even took piano lessons from a young and famous musician named Franz Liszt.

Marriage and Becoming Catholic

On July 13, 1833, Georgiana married Alexander George Fullerton in Paris. He worked at the embassy with her father. Eight years later, her father retired, and Georgiana and Alexander left Paris.

They lived in Rome for a few years. While there, her husband decided to become a Roman Catholic. Georgiana followed his lead and also became a Roman Catholic on March 29, 1846, in London.

In London, she joined two other important women, Margaret Radclyffe Livingstone Eyre and Cecil Chetwynd Kerr. Like Georgiana, they had recently become Catholic. These three women were known for their Catholic charity work.

Helping Others

In 1855, Georgiana's only son passed away at age 21. This was a very sad time for her and her husband. After losing her son, she decided to spend her life helping others. She gave a lot of her time and money to charity.

In 1856, she joined a special group called the Third Order of Saint Francis. This group is connected to the Franciscans, who are known for helping people. In 1861, she and her husband lived in a fashionable part of London with eleven servants.

Her home in Sussex became a center for her charity work. She worked to bring the sisters of St. Vincent of Paul to England. These sisters are known for their good deeds. In 1872, she helped Frances Margaret Taylor start a school and religious group. This group was called the Poor Servants of the Mother of God Incarnate. Georgiana was a major helper, giving money and support to them.

Later Life and Legacy

Three years later, Georgiana moved one last time with her husband and eight servants. They moved to Bournemouth, England. She died in her home there on January 19, 1885. Her remains are buried in the Cemetery of the Sacred Heart in Roehampton.

After she died, a book was written about her life and her charity work. It was called Lady Georgiana Fullerton, sa Vie et ses Œuvres. Today, a Blue Plaque can be found on the Sacred Heart Church in Bournemouth. This plaque remembers all the good things she did to help others.
