About Germain Nouveau
His Early Life
Germain Nouveau was born in Pourrières, France, on July 31, 1851. He had three brothers and sisters. His mother passed away before he turned seven years old. After this, his grandfather raised him. He spent most of his childhood in Aix-en-Provence. In 1872, he moved to Paris.
Starting His Career
In Paris in 1872, Germain Nouveau published his first poem. It was called "Sonnet of Summer." Around this time, he discovered the works of other poets. These included Paul Verlaine and a very talented young writer named Arthur Rimbaud.
In late 1873, Nouveau met Rimbaud in person. They traveled together to England in March 1874. Nouveau lived with Rimbaud in London for about three months. Then, he returned to Paris by himself.
Travels and Later Life
Nouveau traveled to Belgium and the Netherlands. In 1875, in Brussels, he received a special gift. It was the original writings of Rimbaud's famous work, Illuminations, from Verlaine. He then went back to London and met Verlaine again. They became good friends for many years.
In 1878, Nouveau wrote for French newspapers like Le Gaulois and Le Figaro. He used different pen names, such as Jean de Noves. In 1883, he traveled far away to Beirut. When he came back home, he taught at a school in Paris.
In 1891, Nouveau became very ill. He spent several months in a hospital. After getting better, he chose to live a very simple life. He wanted to be like Saint Benoît-Joseph Labre, who lived in poverty. He traveled to Rome and then went on a long journey to Santiago de Compostela. In 1911, he returned to his hometown of Pourrières. He passed away there in 1920.
His Lasting Impact
Most of Germain Nouveau's poems and other writings were published after he died. Many of his works are collected in a special book called the Pléiade edition.
He had a big impact on a group of artists called the Surrealists. Some critics, like Louis Aragon, believed he was a very important poet. They even said he was as great as Rimbaud.
Several streets in France are named after him. You can find rue Germain Nouveau in places like Aix-en-Provence, Fréjus, Rousset, and Saint-Denis.
