History of Germantown Hills
Early Settlement and Growth
People started settling in the Germantown Hills area around November 1831. A preacher named Zadock Hall began holding church services there. Soon, a settler named Philip Klein opened a place to make iron tools.
By 1837, German Catholic families in the area started their own church. In 1850, William Hoshor built a hotel and restaurant. He named it the Germantown House. The village would be named after this house over 100 years later. A steam-powered sawmill was built in 1860. In the 1890s, the Union House was built. It served as a restaurant, grocery store, and saloon.
Becoming an Official Village
The area remained mostly farmland for a long time. Then, in 1954, it officially became a village. It was first named Oak Grove Park. The people who founded the village wanted to use the name "Germantown." This was to honor the Germantown House and the many German-American families living there. However, another village in southern Illinois already had that name.
When it first became a village, Oak Grove Park had 182 people. In 1967, the name Oak Grove Park was changed to Germantown Hills. The village's population grew steadily. By the 1980 census, it reached 524 people. This was partly because a new neighborhood, Whispering Oaks, joined the village. More building and growth led to a population of 1,195 by 1990.
The village continued to grow quickly. Many people moved there as suburbs expanded around the Peoria area. This growth brought the population to its most recent count of 3,438 in 2010.
