Early Baseball Days
Gerry Davis was born in Trenton, New Jersey. He went to Ewing High School and later attended Howard University. In 1978, while in college, he played summer baseball with a team called the Harwich Mariners. This team was part of the Cape Cod Baseball League, which is a well-known league for college players. Gerry played so well that he was chosen as an all-star for the league.
After college, the San Diego Padres baseball team picked him in the sixth round of the 1980 Major League Baseball draft. This meant they wanted him to join their team and play professionally.
Professional Baseball Career
Gerry Davis played professional baseball for six seasons, from 1980 to 1985, and then again in 1987. During this time, he played at different levels of minor league baseball, from Class A to Triple-A. These levels are like steps that players take to get ready for the major leagues.
He was a very good player in the minor leagues. He was named an All-Star in the Carolina League in 1981 and in the Pacific Coast League in 1983.
Playing for the San Diego Padres
Gerry played for the San Diego Padres in the major leagues during two different periods. In these games, he got 22 hits. These hits included five doubles (where he reached second base) and one triple (where he reached third base). He also had three runs batted in (RBIs), which means he helped his teammates score runs.
His batting average was .301, which is considered very good. Most of his time in the MLB was in 1985. That year, he played in 44 games. He started seven games playing in right field and two games playing in left field.
Injury and Retirement
Unfortunately, Gerry suffered a knee injury in January 1986. This injury was serious and caused him to miss the entire 1986 baseball season. The injury also affected his ability to play baseball at the same level. After playing one more season in the minor leagues in 1987, he decided to retire from professional baseball.
